Shanghai was one of the first cities in China to operate taxis. In 1908, foreign-owned taxis were available in Shanghai. In the 1930s, Chinese-founded Xiangsheng Taxi Company applied for 40000 as the telephone number. It was not until the mid-1980s that rental cars gradually replaced rental tricycles as the main body of taxis in Shanghai.
