Shanghai Audio Visual Archives, namely Copyright Assets Centre of SMG was established in 1984. As a unit of Shanghai Media Group, SAVA is the first professional institution to implement centralized management on radio and television program files in China, which is also the only professional audio and visual archive in Shanghai. SAVA makes great efforts in copyright management, media assets service, archive researching and content exploitation.
SAVA is in charge of centralized management of all the audiovisual files of Shanghai Media Group for 15 TV channels and 13 radio frequencies. Through taking-over, purchasing, recording, filming, exchanging and other ways, SAVA is dedicating to collect various audiovisual archives worldwide and currently possesses more than 1 million spools or tapes of broadcasting archives, including 1.35 million tapes of broadcast programs,570 thousand hours of digital broadcast archives.
More than 4 million pieces of audiovisual archives including sounds, videos, scripts, pictures and books are accessible, wildly-shared and downloaded for reuse through the internal media assets network, with 55 thousand hours of annual increasing broadcast contents.
More than 25.8 thousand of media encyclopedia entries summarize and integrate our rich audiovisual resources, providing valuable information and inspiration for all directors and editors in SMG.
Since its inception in 1984, SAVA's audiovisual archive management has undergone such a transformation: from managing tapes to managing content, from managing programs to managing materials, from managing files to managing Copyrights.
Through the long-term practice in audiovisual archives management, SAVA implements some innovation in China’s Broadcast industry, taking the lead in saving historical AV archive, building the MAM system, launching oral history project, producing TV and radio programs with historical archives and developing restoration technique, etc.

Meanwhile, SAVA keeps extensive cooperation and exchanges with national and international society. SAVA is member of FIAT/IFAT, FOCAL, IASA, SEAPAVAA, copyright society of China and information committee of China Radio and Television Association.
Since 2015, actively making full use of our advantages in resources and relying on our professional researching team; we have been adhering to the integration development of traditional broadcast media and new media. We keep conducting deep research on audiovisual collection and have achieved fruitful outcomes in exploitation. Our mission is to give a second new life to historical audiovisual archives.
Archive director:We have pioneered the innovative archive director mode. Our senior archive researchers are getting deeply involved in documentaries and other large-scale projects, as consultants of footage, from project planning to program producing.
Oral History:From 2006 on, we have started the oral history project and set up oral history studio, committed to the protection of the intangible cultural heritage. After 10 years of efforts, we have finished oral history interviewing and recording projects including: old generation of artists, old generation of television workers, old generation of broadcaster, etc. More than 2000 hours of oral records were collected and 955 people got interviewed.
PROGRAM PRODUCING:Besides, our research team has made a number of radio and television programs of high quality, which are widely spread on SMG channels and new media platforms. For example, we have a weekly TV column called Shanghai Stories broadcasted on Shanghai News Channel every Saturday. It has been broadcasted for more than 600 episodes. And we have a daily radio series program called Today in History broadcasted more than 500episodes.
Public Screening Project:The public screening project started in 2006 and has entered its 11th year, received unanimous praise from the audience.SAVA has formed a social screening platform with libraries, archives and museums, a campus screening platform with local university and college, a community screening platform with neighborhood committees, a political institution screening platform with government organs.So far, our team has completed more than a thousand screening events, with more than 80 events yearly.
