In June 1963, Shanghai government encouraged young people to participate in the Xinjiang Construction Corps. In August, nearly 20,000 young people from Shanghai went to Xinjiang by train to defend the border where they forged a deep friendship. After 1980, Shanghai educated youth left Xinjiang and many returned to their hometown. More than 50 years later, these educated youth formed the Karakorum Mountain Shanghai Educated Youth Association. They meet at festivals to help each other and continue to be good friends.
