The Shanghai Horse Racing Association is commonly known as the "horse hall". In 1850, the British businessman Hogg opened the first racecourse in Nanjing Road, Shanghai, and then opened the second and third racecourses. In 1941, the Pacific War broke out and the Japanese army occupied the racecourses. The Shanghai Military Management Commission reclaimed the racecourses in 1951, and the Shanghai People’s Government converted the racecourses into the People’s Park and People’s Square in the same year. In 1954, the Shanghai Horse Racing Association was taken over by the People's Government and changed to the Shanghai Library. In 1979, Shanghai racecourses became a public place for citizens to entertain, exercise and learn. (poor picture quality) (silent material)
