On January 7, 1980, Shanghai Passenger and Cargo ship departed its first flight to Hong Kong at the outer Hongqiao International Dock, marking the official regular sailing of Shanghai-Hong Kong direct passenger and cargo liners that had been suspended for 28 years. Li Weizhong, vice minister of Communications, leaders of the Municipal Public Transport Office and the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, and people from all walks of life went to the terminal to see off.
